24 hour car wash: where to find one open tonight

A 24 hour car wash may be a lonely jet-wash bay, not a cheerful person waiting at 3am with a sponge.

Short answer

Look for an operator that gives separate wash hours, rather than relying on a petrol station’s opening time. Unattended self-service bays are the most credible overnight option; staffed all-night washes exist, but the confirmed examples are concentrated in central London.

Why ‘open 24 hours’ can send you to a closed wash

Google tells petrol stations to publish the hours of their fuel pumps. It also lets businesses add “More hours” for services running to a different timetable. The catch is obvious: a forecourt may be open while its car-wash equipment is switched off, frozen or unavailable. The Google Business Profile guidelines make that distinction possible, but not every listing makes it clear.

MFG’s pages show the ambiguity neatly. Morton Park in Darlington publishes 24-hour opening and lists both “Car Wash” and “Jet Wash”, without separate wash hours. Its Streatham forecourt uses the same pattern. That proves the label can apply to the site without confirming that every machine runs all night.

From the WashFinder database1,177

UK directory listings that publish 24-hour opening on all seven days. This is a directory count, not an official national register.

Across those listings, 917 are categorised as car washes, 216 as valeting services and 40 as self-service car washes. The remaining four are categorised as two petrol stations, one convenience store and one supermarket. Categories do not settle what you will find on arrival, but they show why a search result needs a second look.

Two one-star reviews capture the cost of trusting the label literally:

“Says it's open 24/7 got there told it was not open”

Google review, MFG Car Wash Centre

“It says open 24 hours on Google I went to Pemberton Gardens just about 8am on Sunday and there is no car wash there at all!”

What is genuinely available after midnight?

The strongest all-night proposition is an unattended self-service bay. Moonbeam publishes 24-hour access, contactless payment and a flat £1-per-minute rate at 11 sites across the Midlands and North. Wash Me Northampton has six self-service bays, accepts card or app payment and uses a heated floor to keep them operating below freezing.

Staffed options are rarer. 24 Hour Car Wash in Q-Park Queensway advertises hand washing round the clock. American Carwash City’s Great Eastern Street branch advertises 24-hour drive-through and valet service, although its operator page dates from 2020, so check before travelling. By contrast, IMO Longbenton opens 08:30–18:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00–17:00 on Sunday. A large attended chain is not automatically a late-night chain.

Self-service bay

  • The clearest all-night availability
  • Published contactless options
  • You control how long you pay for
  • You do the work
  • Cold weather can close equipment

Staffed wash

  • Someone else cleans the car
  • Hand wash and valet options can be available
  • Confirmed overnight choices are scarce
  • A forecourt’s hours may not cover its staff

Use WashFinder near you to build a shortlist, but treat the listing as the start of the check, not the finish. If you are unsure which format suits the car, our comparison of hand, automatic and self-service washes explains the practical differences.

If the operator names separate wash hours

Use those hours, not the wider forecourt timetable.

If only the petrol station says 24 hours

Call first or choose a dedicated self-service operator with explicit overnight access.

If the temperature is near freezing

Look for a heated bay or expect an unplanned closure.

What drivers say about late opening

Among 10,961 stored review texts for the 1,177 all-week, all-day listings, mentions of “late” and “night” were much more common than “open all”. That does not prove whether a wash was operating at the time. It does show that overnight availability is something drivers discuss, often in language less tidy than an opening-hours field.

Phrase mentions in 10,961 stored review texts

“late”236
“night”223
“24”194
“safe”46
“dark”18

The same group has 696 listings with ratings. Their unweighted mean is 3.79, while the review-weighted mean across 31,279 Google reviews is 3.93. Neither score tells you whether tonight’s visit will work. Recent comments about broken bays, switched-off equipment and night access are more useful than a handsome average assembled over years. Our guide to whether a car wash is still open gives a fuller pre-trip check.

Prices: late does not automatically mean dearer

The overnight self-service operators publish straightforward rates. Moonbeam charges £1 per minute. Wash Me charges £2 for 180 seconds by card or £2 for 234 seconds through the Ready2Wash app. No reliable national average exists, and no published overnight surcharge was found for these bays.

Format and operatorPublished priceAvailability detail
Moonbeam self-service£1 per minute24 hours at 11 listed sites
Wash Me card payment£2 for 180 secondsSix 24-hour bays in Northampton
Wash Me app payment£2 for 234 secondsSix 24-hour bays in Northampton
Platts jet wash£3 minimum; £5 average spend08:30–20:00, not overnight
Platts automatic£6–£12May close below 1°C
Manchester mobile valetExterior wash from £25, plus £40Premium applies 22:00–06:00 and weekends

The £40 premium belongs to a specialist mobile valeting service, not a coin-operated bay. Central London’s staffed Queensway wash publishes prices from £9.99 for a small-saloon wash and dry, but its price page is undated, so regard that as indicative and confirm it directly.

Payment deserves checking too. Of 738 directory listings in this group that specify any method, 734 list card or contactless. A card-only machine is lawful: the Bank of England explains that a shop can choose what it accepts. “Legal tender” does not force a business to take cash.

The cold-weather trap

Freezing weather can defeat a genuine 24/7 promise. Cresswells in Wokingham says its jet wash is open around the clock subject to freezing weather. Platts says its automatic wash cannot operate below 1°C and may close without notice, especially early morning or early evening. Wash Me’s heated floor is a meaningful exception because it is designed to keep its bays open below freezing.

National Highways runs its winter service from 1 October to early April, using around 280,000 tonnes of salt and 530 gritters. That creates the irritating combination of greater need for washing and a higher chance that exposed equipment will be shut.

There is no UK-wide rule setting car-wash opening hours. In England, councils can use planning conditions to restrict activities at particular times, while statutory-nuisance rules deal with unreasonable noise. A 2025 Barnet appeal recorded jet washes audible 50 metres away and upheld enforcement against the site. All-night washing is therefore an address-by-address permission, not an industry entitlement.

Your two-minute check before driving across town

Before you set off

Police advice is to park in well-lit areas at night, remove contents and physically check that the doors are locked. At an unattended bay, keep your key and phone on you rather than leaving them in the cabin. If the place feels wrong, the paintwork can remain grubby until morning. Dirt is cheaper than misplaced bravado.

The verdict

For tonight, favour a dedicated self-service operator that explicitly publishes all-night wash access, separate from any forecourt hours. Check recent reviews, payment and temperature before leaving; if any one of those is unclear, choose another site or wait until morning.

How we counted. WashFinder analysed 1,177 listings inside the UK bounding box that published 24-hour opening on all seven days, using Google Maps listing and review data collected in 2026. Counts describe this directory, not an official register; ratings are per-site unless identified as review-weighted, and review-text counts are literal phrase matches.
