An automatic car wash can either move your car or move itself around your parked car. Confuse the two and the wrong handbrake setting becomes rather more than a detail.
First identify whether you are entering a conveyor tunnel or parking under a rollover gantry. Then check the machine’s size limit, prepare the car and follow that site’s instructions rather than relying on habit.
Four machines, but only two questions matter
The names are less tidy than the machinery. A gantry and a rollover are the same class: WashTec uses the former; Christ uses the latter. Touchless describes how the car is cleaned, not whether it moves. A twin-gantry system is the fourth layout you may meet, with two units working in series rather than one.
Ask two questions at the entrance: does my car move, and does anything touch its paint? A WashTec conveyor carries the vehicle through fixed modules on a chain or belt. A rollover parks the vehicle while the portal travels around it. A touchless rollover does that without brushes. WashTec’s twin-gantry Takt processes two cars in parallel and is rated at up to 20 vehicles an hour.
- Conveyor tunnel
- A chain or belt carries the car through fixed wash stations.
- Rollover or gantry
- The car remains in the bay while the portal moves around it.
- Touchless
- High-pressure water and chemicals clean without brushes touching the paint.
- Twin gantry
- Two gantries work in series, allowing two cars to be washed and dried in parallel.
| Format | What moves? | Paint contact | Example from a manufacturer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conveyor tunnel | Your car, on a chain or belt | Brush modules can contact it | Christ EVO STAR |
| Brush rollover | The gantry | Horizontal and side brushes | Christ ALPHA |
| Touchless rollover | The gantry | No brushes | Christ FLUX |
| Twin gantry | Two gantries work in series | Set by the programme | WashTec SoftCare Takt |
Istobal lists tunnels from 9.6 to 50 m long, with stated capacity of 60 vehicles an hour for a three-brush T’WASH PRO and up to 80 for the five-brush version. These are manufacturer specifications, not promises about the queue.

These are directory counts, not an official register. The 162 rated listings averaged 3.89 when each site counted equally; weighting by all 48,329 reviews raised the mean to 4.04.
Brushes, chemicals and the order of the wash
A tunnel builds the clean from separate stations. Christ describes an entrance pre-spray that cools the paint and softens dirt, followed by special foam, high-pressure pre-wash, wheel and sill cleaning, horizontal and side brushes, rear cleaning, an osmosis rinse, preservative and drying. The conveyor keeps the queue moving while each module does one job.
A brush rollover puts the equipment on a travelling portal. Christ’s ALPHA can include roof and side nozzles, horizontal and lateral brushes, wheel washing and drying. The equipment makes passes around the parked car.
Touchless still involves plenty of chemistry. The Christ FLUX sequence has 14 stages: alkaline and acidic applications, high-pressure passes, foam, wax, an osmosis rinse, drying aid and drying. Its chemical dwell time is adjustable from 30 to 60 seconds.
Touchless rollover
- No brushes touch the paint
- High pressure works across roof and sides
- No-brush does not mean chemical-free
- The FLUX example has a 2,300 mm height limit
Brush rollover
- Dedicated body and wheel brushes are available
- ALPHA configurations reach 2,900 mm high
- Wash material contacts the paint
- Paint-friendly claims come from manufacturers
The scale below is an editorial map of vehicle movement, not a measured risk score.
Do this before the machinery starts
The machine’s dimensions matter more than the badge over the entrance. Christ offers ALPHA wash heights from 2,300 to 2,900 mm and a 2,400 mm mirror-zone width, optionally 2,550 mm. Its FLUX is listed at 2,300 mm high and 2,550 mm wide at the mirrors. WashTec’s SoftCare SE reaches 2.90 m high and 2.58 m wide. A roof box changes your total height, so measure the car as presented and read the limit on that machine.
IMO says maximum vehicle size varies by site and puts vehicle and wheel information at the bottom of each wash-pad menu. Its 325 mm wheel allowance applies only at listed wide-wheel sites. Brand familiarity is no substitute for reading the board.
WashTec supplies those preparation points. Soft-tops and electric cars are not automatically excluded: IMO says it accepts both, provided a soft-top is undamaged. The displayed limits still decide whether your vehicle can enter.
- Identify the mechanism. Look for a conveyor track or a rollover bay before choosing the controls.
- Read the local limits. Check height, width and wheel restrictions against the car as it stands today.
- Prepare the exterior and electronics. Deal with the aerial, mirrors, rear wiper, sensors and start-stop before entry.
- For a conveyor, select neutral. Do not steer or brake while the chain or belt carries the car.
- Check the electronic parking brake. On cars that apply it when the engine is switched off, leave the ignition on through the conveyor or disable Auto Hold as the vehicle handbook allows.
- For a rollover, use its instructions instead. The vehicle remains in position while the gantry moves; do not import conveyor advice into a different machine.
Prices vary by site, even under one brand
There is no single national price. IMO’s FAQ gives indicative figures of around £4 for a basic wash, £7 for Triple Foam and £12 for Ultra HD, then tells drivers to contact the site because prices vary. At IMO Reading, The Meadway, the Quick Pay list checked on 23 October 2026 ran from £6 to £20.
| Programme at Reading | Pay-as-you-go | App or discounted price |
|---|---|---|
| Eco Wash | £6 | £5.70 |
| Triple Foam | £8.50 | £8.08 |
| Diamond Wax | £10 | £9.50 |
| Ultra HD | £15 | £14.25 |
| Ceramic wash | £20 | £19 |
The £4 national indication versus a £6 site price, and £12 versus £15 for Ultra HD, is the lesson: check the specific site. Our guide to what a car wash should cost compares the other formats.
What do real reviews complain about?
Across 4,206 review texts stored for these listings, “scratch” appeared in 64, “brush” in 53 and “swirl” in 10. Those are phrase counts, not confirmed damage cases. “Closed” appeared in 51, “card” in 46, “queue” in 28, “broken” in 25 and “out of order” in seven.
“The fella scratched my car with jet wash noticed when i got out went back he tried to say it wasn't him”

Manufacturers describe brush-pressure control, mirror detection and paint-friendly wash materials. Those are manufacturers’ claims, not independent tests. One account cannot establish the general risk either. For the wider pattern, read what car-wash reviews complain about.
“Simple to use. Fairly good job for a machine. App is simple to use too. Staff are friendly and the results good”

If damage appears, IMO’s process is to report it at the site, complete a form and supply photographs. Head office investigates and says it will provide a final response within eight weeks.
The water claim needs context
“Automated means wasteful” is too simple. Water Reuse Europe reported in 2020 that an unregulated hand wash using two high-pressure lances for roughly 10 minutes could consume 300–360 litres per vehicle. The same report said automated equipment can recycle up to 95% of water, depending on the system. No reliable litres-per-car figure is published for the machines discussed here, so the percentages should not be converted into one.
On 20 October 2026, DEFRA and the Environment Agency said severe drought affected parts of six named English counties. Applications from three water companies for non-essential use bans were under consideration. Local restrictions decide what remains available.
Use the car washes near you, then check live opening information and machine instructions before travelling.
How we counted. WashFinder selected 176 UK-directory listings labelled automatic, tunnel or touchless from Google Maps data collected in 2026. Ratings cover the 162 listings with a rating; 4.04 is weighted by 48,329 Google reviews, while 3.89 is the unweighted mean of per-site ratings. Phrase counts come from 4,206 stored review texts. The directory is not an official register.
Ignore the logo for a moment and identify the machine. If a conveyor moves the car, neutral, free-rolling wheels and the correct electronic-brake setting are crucial. If a gantry moves around the car, use that bay’s directions. In both cases, check dimensions first, prepare mirrors, aerial, wiper and sensors, then choose a programme on its real price rather than its grandest name.
