A valet can remove every visible spot and still lose the argument with a leaking door seal. If the cabin stays wet, the mould wins the rematch.
Treat mould in car interior as a moisture fault first. Find and stop the leak or condensation, then clean a small patch with proper protection; use a specialist for widespread growth, soaked trim or rapid recurrence.
Why cleaning alone does not work
Mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated spaces and releases spores into the air, according to the UK Health Security Agency. In a car, the damp can come from wet belongings, trapped condensation or water entering through a door, sunroof or heater matrix.
The official principle is blunt: removing surface mould does not prevent it reappearing. Car-detailing businesses say much the same. Exquisite Valet’s 30-day treatment guarantee applies only when the car is dry; Medusa Auto Detailing says broken seals or leaving the car unused can allow recurrence.
Suspect water ingress. Check doors and the sunroof, and ask a trained mechanic to trace a leak you cannot find.
Moist air is trapped in the cabin. Use air conditioning with fresh-air mode and remove wet belongings.
A careful DIY surface treatment may be reasonable, followed by complete drying.
Stop disturbing it and use a qualified mould-removal professional.
Condensation forms when warm, moisture-laden air meets a cold surface. Toyota’s explanation points to breath, wet clothes and shoes, plus modern seals that make it harder for moist air to escape. Air conditioning removes moisture from cabin air, while switching from recirculation to fresh air helps. For a fuller diagnosis, use our guide to condensation inside a car.
Autumn 2025 supplied plenty of raw material. The Met Office recorded 403.4mm of UK rain, 120% of average and more than spring and summer 2025 combined. That does not prove rain caused any individual outbreak. It does explain why wet coats, muddy boots and damp carpets deserve attention when the temperature drops.
- Spore
- An airborne particle released by mould; exposure can trigger asthma and other symptoms.
- Water ingress
- Water entering the cabin through a leak, such as at a door or sunroof.
- Fresh-air mode
- The ventilation setting that draws outside air in rather than repeatedly circulating damp cabin air.
- Cabin filter
- The filter for incoming cabin air; musty smells and misty windows can signal that it needs changing.
Decide whether this is a DIY job
A tiny patch on a hard surface in an otherwise dry car is not the same job as mould across seats, belts, carpet and headlining. The larger and wetter the affected area, the stronger the case for professional help. Official guidance says larger areas should be handled by qualified professionals and warns that disturbing mouldy carpet can release a significant quantity of spores.
DIY suitability is our editorial judgement from the safety and remediation guidance cited above, not a measured risk score. Higher means more reason to use a professional.
The health question matters. NHS Inform says inhaling or touching spores may cause sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes or a skin rash, and mould can trigger asthma attacks. Babies, children, older people, anyone with asthma, allergies or eczema, and people with weakened immune systems should stay away from damp and mould as much as possible.
If mould worsens an existing lung condition, speak to a GP, nurse or specialist. Asthma + Lung UK advises contacting a GP as soon as possible if symptoms worsen or a reliever inhaler is needed three or more times a week.
Remove a small patch without spreading it
Use this process only for limited growth that you can reach safely, after dealing with the source of moisture. Soft, absorbent materials are harder: government guidance warns that mould can be impossible to remove completely from carpets and furnishings, so some contaminated material may need disposal.
- Keep vulnerable people away. Do not put a child, older person or anyone with asthma, allergies, eczema or a weakened immune system in the cabin during the job.
- Ventilate and protect yourself. Open the windows, then put on a mask, gloves and goggles before touching affected material.
- Find the moisture source. Check for wet carpet, damp in the boot, leaking doors or sunroof, and persistent condensation. A hidden leak may need a trained mechanic.
- Avoid dry disturbance. Do not begin by brushing or pulling out mouldy carpet, because that can release spores.
- Treat a small hard-surface patch. Which? recommends equal parts white vinegar and warm water, left for up to one hour before wiping, or a dedicated mould remover for stubborn growth.
- Remove residue and dry fully. Wipe the treated surface, dispose of contaminated material in a bag, and air-dry the cabin.
- Watch for recurrence. New growth after cleaning points back to unresolved moisture; call a professional if it spreads or returns quickly.
A Halfords 500ml anti-bacterial interior cleaner listed at £6.28 on 23 October 2026 and was tested to EN 1650, the fungicidal standard. Product suitability still matters: Simoniz explicitly says none of its own products is formulated to treat mould. “Interior cleaner” on a bottle is not enough.
What removal costs, from vinegar to a full treatment
DIY materials are inexpensive; diagnosing ingress and treating an entire cabin are not. These were the listed prices on 23 October 2026, not national tariffs.
| Operator | Area | Listed mould-removal price | What changes the bill |

| Exquisite Valet | Mobile; area undisclosed | Small £120; medium £155; large £190; SUV/7-seat £235; vans from £275 | Vehicle size; guarantee applies only if the car is dry |
| Medusa Auto Detailing | London and Hertfordshire | Small £180; medium £210; large £220; XL £230 | Excessive-mould add-on £120; congestion-zone surcharge £15 |
| Klean Kut Detailing | Plymouth | From £220 | Severity and contamination type; quote follows inspection |
Exquisite also listed ozone-only treatment at £80 for a small vehicle and £100 for a large one, taking 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Do not mistake that for complete remediation. Its full mould service uses three stages: ozone, a deep anti-fungal clean and an air treatment through the vents.
Ozone also carries a workplace safety limit. The Health and Safety Executive sets 0.2 ppm over 15 minutes for employee exposure, and describes irritation of the nose, throat, airways and lungs among the possible effects. The same guidance says ozone inhibits bacterial growth but does not kill the bacteria. A machine is no substitute for fixing a leak and physically cleaning contaminated material.
A £9.99 Halfords reusable dehumidifier contains 350g of silica gel and claims absorption of up to 40% of its own weight: about 140ml. That can help with routine cabin moisture. It cannot dry a soaked carpet or repair a seal. Which? makes the broader point that a dehumidifier may stop mould spreading or developing, but will not remove growth already present.
Stop it coming back
Prevention means taking water out and giving moist air a route out. A January 2026 warning reported by The Standard singled out umbrellas, wet coats, muddy boots, gym bags, leftover food and drinks, and dog blankets as items that encourage a damp cabin.
Halfords recommends replacing the cabin or pollen filter yearly or every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. A fitted price depends on the car, so there is no single reliable figure. If you need hands-on help, use car washes near you to find local operators, then ask directly whether they offer specialist mould treatment rather than an ordinary interior valet.
Can a mouldy car fail its MOT?
Mould on a seat or a musty smell is not an MOT test item. Visibility is. The DVSA inspection manual says a windscreen should fail only when the driver’s view is significantly affected.
There is no mould-specific endorsement code or fixed “mould fine”. Do not drive with condensation or growth obscuring the glass. If the screen is frozen as well as wet inside, follow the safe sequence in our guide to defrosting car windows.
Find the water before buying the cure. A small patch in a dry cabin may suit careful DIY treatment, but widespread growth, soaked trim or quick recurrence belongs with a specialist and, where needed, a mechanic. Clean only after the leak or condensation is controlled, then keep the cabin ventilated and free of wet kit.
