The same basic exterior wash cost £10 at one Tesco car park and £18 at another on the same day. The reason starts with the name above the supermarket door.

Short answer

Tesco hosts several kinds of car wash, but its staffed hand washes trade through Waves and are run by individual franchise partners. Prices, menus, hours and service therefore vary by site.

Tesco provides the car park, not the sponge

A Tesco hand car wash is not staffed or operated by Tesco. Tesco calls Waves its UK car wash franchise partner, while Waves says each location is owned and operated by an individual franchise partner. That distinction matters when you ask for a price, leave your keys or complain about damage.

Tesco’s own car-wash guidance says facilities vary by filling station. A Tesco car park might have a staffed hand wash, a self-service jet wash or an automatic rollover wash. They are different services with different operators. The supermarket branding does not create one national menu.

From the WashFinder database90

Tesco-branded car-wash listings in our UK directory: 47 categorised as car washes and 43 as self-service car washes.

That count is a directory snapshot, not an official register of every Tesco facility. To find what is actually nearby, use the Tesco store locator’s “Hand car wash” filter or search WashFinder by location before setting off.

The price board is a postcode lottery

We compared live Waves prices at eight Tesco sites on 23 October 2026. For a volume-two car, the cheapest Bronze exterior wash was £10 in Salford; Kensington charged £18. Gold ran from £25 to £42, and Full Monty from £65 to £130 where available.

Bronze V2£10–£18

The cheapest exterior wash for a volume-two car across the eight-site sample. A fuller contents list was unavailable.

Gold V2£25–£42

Exterior clean plus interior vacuum, dashboard, interior glass, mats and Express Wax.

Full Monty V2£65–£130

Gold-level valet plus deeper seat, cabin, coating and exterior-plastics treatments.

These are snapshots, not a tariff that every branch must follow. Salford did not offer Full Monty; Leeds Seacroft did not offer Bronze+. Even the menu changes with the postcode.

The gap is substantial. Kensington’s Bronze V2 price was 80% higher than Salford’s, despite both carrying the same tier name. If you want broader context before accepting the board, see what a UK car wash should cost.

Add-ons can move the total again. Across these sites, vacuuming ranged from £5 to £25, Express Wax from £5 to £10 and deep sanitising from £30 to £120. Decide what you want before the upsell begins.

Your car’s volume can change the quote

Waves groups cars by volume, calculated as length × height × width. Volume one is below 9.7 m³; volume two is 9.7–11.5 m³; volume three is 11.6–14.1 m³; and volume four is above 14.1 m³. The operative assigns the band when you arrive.

That makes the classification worth checking. A model that looks compact can be tall or wide enough to cross a threshold, and the number on the board may apply only to a smaller band.

Before you hand over the keys

Waves says a booking must be made with the on-site operator or in advance by phone. App booking and payment apply only when you arrive in the vehicle registered in the app. Its terms also set a £5 charge for cancelling or rearranging with less than one hour’s notice, or arriving more than an hour late.

Hand wash or jet wash at Tesco?

The choice is less about logos than labour. At a hand wash, you leave the cleaning to the operator and pay for a defined tier. At a self-service bay, you control where the lance goes and how long you spend, but there is no reliable primary price list covering Tesco jet washes nationally.

Staffed hand wash

  • Operator does the physical cleaning
  • Interior-valet tiers may be available
  • Price is agreed for a named service
  • Prices and menus vary by franchise
  • Vehicle band can alter the quote
  • You may need to leave your keys

Self-service jet wash

  • You control the lance and target areas
  • No need to hand the car to an operative
  • Useful when you want an exterior-only clean
  • You do the work yourself
  • Equipment condition can vary
  • No national Tesco price list is published

Our directory records 75 Tesco-branded listings that publish a payment method, and all 75 list card or contactless. That does not prove cash is accepted or refused at any particular branch. Check the listing or ask on arrival; card and cash arrangements vary across UK washes.

Ratings tell two different stories

Of the 90 directory listings, 65 had a Google rating. Their unweighted mean was 2.92: each site counted once, whether it had one review or hundreds. Weighting by all 857 Google reviews produced 4.07. Busy, well-reviewed sites therefore pull the customer-level figure sharply upwards.

Neither number guarantees what will happen at the bay. It says something useful, though: look at the individual site’s recent comments, not a national brand impression. Our wider comparison explains why a five-star car-wash rating can mislead.

“This is the best car wash I have ever felt with, the workers are so nice and professional, they left the car spotless.”

The praise is emphatic. So is the frustration at the other end.

“I left my car for 1.5 hour and they even didn't touch it.”

Google review, Tesco Hand Car Wash

Among 439 stored review texts, 11 contained “broken”, nine contained “closed”, seven contained “out of order” and seven contained “scratch”. Phrase counts are signals, not verdicts: a word can appear in praise, criticism or a reply. They do tell you what to scan for in the newest site-level reviews.

If the wash goes wrong, start with the operator

Waves directs complaints first to the site’s franchise partner or manager, then to Waves customer service, which says it replies within seven days. Keep the receipt, your before-and-after photographs and a written account of what happened.

Waves’ terms limit its liability to the greater of evidenced damage or £1,000 and exclude existing chips, flaking lacquer and damage outside the wash area. Treat that as the operator’s contractual position, not a substitute for documenting the car properly.

  1. Stop and document it. Photograph the affected area before leaving, including the wider panel and the wash bay where useful.
  2. Speak to the site manager. The franchise partner is the first complaint route, so ask for the operator's details and record the response.
  3. Escalate to Waves. Send the receipt, images and a concise timeline; its published response target is seven days.
  4. State the remedy you want. Be clear whether you seek repeat performance, a price reduction or evidenced repair costs.

How we counted. WashFinder analysed 90 Tesco-branded UK listings from Google Maps data collected in 2026. Rating means, review totals, payment methods, categories and phrase counts describe listings in our directory, not an official Tesco or Waves register; live price comparisons came from the Waves locator on 23 October 2026.

The verdict

Treat the hand wash as a local franchise wearing familiar branding. Check the exact site, vehicle band, menu, price and recent reviews before leaving your keys. Gold is the first Waves tier in this sample with a defined interior clean; Bronze is the cheaper exterior option, but its fuller contents are not reliably published. The postcode can double the top-tier bill, so five minutes spent checking is worth more than blind loyalty to the sign.
