A four-hour “mini” valet can cost more than somebody else’s “full” valet. The grand package name tells you remarkably little; the job list and time allowance tell you nearly everything.
A car valet is a thorough clean of the interior and exterior, rather than a quick body wash. There is no standard definition for “mini” or “full”, so compare the exact work, duration, exclusions and final price before booking.
So what is a car valet, exactly?
The practical dividing line is the interior. A wash deals mainly with the outside; a valet typically adds work on carpets, seats, vents and door shuts. That takes time. The Professional Valeters & Detailers trade association gives indicative durations of 20–40 minutes for a safe wash, one to two hours for a mini valet, and two to six hours for a full valet. A luxury valet may take a full day.
Those are useful guideposts, not binding definitions. Operators write their own menus. One may use “silver” where another uses “full”, while another drops both labels and sells Maintenance, Deep Clean and Enhancement packages. Treat the label as a shelf marker, not a specification.
- Safe wash
- An exterior wash, typically taking 20–40 minutes.
- Mini valet
- Usually a lighter interior-and-exterior package, but with no standard checklist.
- Full valet
- Usually a deeper clean, though its contents and duration still vary by operator.
- Paint correction
- Machine polishing intended to tackle swirl marks and scratches; it is a detailing service, not routine valeting.
“Mini” and “full” are not measurements
Published menus expose the problem. Fresh Car caps its mini valet at one hour 15 minutes and its full valet at two hours 30 minutes. Cotswold Valet allows three to four hours for its mini. In other words, one company’s mini can outlast another company’s full.
| Package as advertised | Published price | Published time | The revealing detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh Car mini valet | From £50 | Up to 1h 15m | National mobile service |
| The Valeting Centre mini valet | £65 | Around 2h | Fixed-site service |
| Cotswold Valet mini valet | £75–£100 | 3–4h | £25 hourly rate; several treatments excluded |
| Fresh Car full valet | From £85 | Up to 2h 30m | Shorter than Cotswold’s mini |
| The Valeters full valet | £130–£160 | Up to 2h 30m | London mobile price varies with vehicle size |
| Cotswold Valet full valet | £150–£200 | 6–8h | Engine bay clean included |
The calculated Cotswold prices simply apply its published £25 hourly rate to its published time ranges. At the other end of the naming problem, Shine Clean avoids mini and full: Maintenance costs £65–£95 for 60–90 minutes, Deep Clean £145–£175 for three to four hours, and Enhancement £410–£450 for five to six hours.
An indicative mobile-valeting band. Read the checklist before assuming stain treatment or shampooing.
An indicative band for a more extensive interior-and-exterior clean.
Several hours to a full day, with more specialist work than routine valeting.
These three bands come from AutoTidy’s UK mobile-valeting price guide, published on 6 October 2026. They are useful orientation, not a national tariff. London mobile quotes of £130–£160 for a time-capped full valet sit above that guide band, but this is not a clean regional comparison.
Book the checklist, not the badge
A sound quote names the tasks and exclusions. Cotswold’s mini, for example, excludes stain removal, steam cleaning, the engine bay, paint protection, and tar and iron removal. The Valeters says its full package excludes steam cleaning and specialist convertible soft-top care; heavy pet hair costs extra. “Full” does not mean every possible treatment.
The insurance question comes directly from Professional Valeters & Detailers’ consumer advice. For mobile work, do not assume the van is completely self-contained. Shine Clean requires access to a power supply and enough room to park its van within two spaces of the car. AutoTidy says travel is usually included inside the normal service area, with possible charges beyond it.
- Describe the car honestly. Give its size and flag deep soiling or pet hair, because these can add time or a separate charge.
- Compare jobs line by line. Ignore “silver”, “full” and similar labels until you have matched the actual tasks.
- Compare time as well as price. A £100 four-hour mini and an £85 two-and-a-half-hour full are not the same product.
- Confirm the final scope. Put add-ons, utilities, travel and exclusions beyond doubt before work starts.
Choose the service by the problem you have
The right booking depends on the car, not on the most impressive word in the brochure.
Start with a mini or maintenance package, then check that its interior jobs match what you expect.
Choose a package that explicitly includes the treatment, or price the add-on before booking.
Ask about paint correction or an enhancement detail. An ordinary valet is the wrong service.
Look specifically for wheels, arches and sills on the checklist rather than trusting the tier name.
Winter grime is not a made-up seasonal upsell. National Highways’ winter service runs from 1 October to early April, with around 280,000 tonnes of rock salt held at the start of winter. A February booking should make you more interested in arches and sills than a shiny dashboard.
For routine timing rather than a rescue clean, see how often to wash your car in the UK. If you only need an ordinary wash, compare hand, automatic and self-service options before paying valet money.
What 1,982 valet listings tell us
WashFinder’s directory contains 1,982 UK listings classified as valeting services. Of those, 1,468 have a rating; their unweighted mean is 4.89. Across 42,138 Google reviews, the review-weighted mean is 4.86. Strong averages are reassuring, but they do not reveal whether a specific package includes shampoo, steam or an engine bay.

Payment and opening-hour information is patchier. Only 421 listings state any payment method, although 414 of those list card or contactless. Opening hours are published for 1,700 listings, and 216 say they open 24 hours on all seven days. Check the individual listing before travelling; you can find a valeting service near you and inspect its current details.
The language in review text is revealing too. Among 21,223 stored reviews with text, “detail” appears more than twice as often as “valet”. Price and interior work also feature heavily.
A phrase count does not tell you whether the writer was pleased or furious. Read the words. Our wider analysis of what car-wash reviews complain about explains why the detail behind a rating matters.
“Really happy with the quality of work, attention to detail and professional service.”

There is no licence behind the package name
No statutory definition fixes what a mini or full valet must contain, and no operating licence gives those labels a standard meaning. The Car Wash Association describes itself as a self-regulating, not-for-profit industry body. In 2024 it called for an enforceable licensing scheme for hand car washes. That proposal matters precisely because such a scheme does not currently govern the menu in front of you.
That does not leave you without consumer protection. Section 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 treats a service contract as including a term that the trader must perform it with reasonable care and skill.
One visible red flag sits outside the sales menu. NetRegs says vehicle wash water is trade effluent and must not run into surface-water drains, surface waters or groundwater. Its guidance covers Scotland and Northern Ireland. Suds streaming into a road gully should not inspire confidence in the rest of the operation.
How we counted. WashFinder figures cover Google Maps listings inside the UK bounding box collected in 2026. Counts describe listings in our directory, not an official register. Rating means use the 1,468 rated listings; phrase counts use 21,223 stored review texts and count reviews containing each phrase. Bars are scaled against the largest count.
Choose a valet by its written checklist, time allowance and exclusions, then compare the final price. A modestly named four-hour package may do more for your car than a “full” service finished in half the time. If the operator cannot say exactly what will happen, spend your money elsewhere.
